AY YORGI GARIPI MONASTRY

    
The monastery is between of, in past moments the most fruitful gardens, vineyards and orchards and from the quiet and pastoral side of that we can see Kınalıada.

Firstly in 1728 Meletios when portrayed the islands said that: “the four big islands which have monasteries”. Afterwards Senior Momars for Burgazada said that: “an island with a monastery” we understood that he meant Karipi because he said: “higher of this there is a church with the name of Jesus.

Manuel Gideon found unexplained the mean of the name “karipi”. Hasiotis, agreed with Scarlatti Vizandio who said that the name “karipi” came from the Arabic word “garip” that means poor. But also he added the hypothesis that the name “karipi” might came from the name of the well which were in old vineyard.
After the World War I in 1919-1920 the building of Karipi Monastery were given for Whiterussians as asylum. Unfortunately, inadvertence all the east pavilion of the cells had burned.Çanlar The fire was put off by the Americans who were patrolled in Kınalıada by their fire boats. The church of Saint George had destroyed by the earthquake of the 17-08-1999. In 2004 the church has restored.
